The pelvic ultrasound scan procedure is usually brief and comfortable, though you may feel slight discomfort. No anaesthetic or pain relief is required, and you’ll be able to resume your daily activities shortly after the scan.

A pelvic ultrasound can be used to diagnose a range of conditions, including miscarriage, placenta previa, foetal abnormalities, and even monitor the foetal heartbeat.

An ultrasound scan is a non-invasive diagnostic tool for assessing the organs situated in a woman’s pelvic area. This includes providing images of her uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and cervix. During the scan, you will be asked to lie on your back or side with your knees bent. The sonographer will carefully insert a slim ultrasound probe, just a few centimetres into the vagina, to capture detailed images on a screen.

Pelvic ultrasounds are generally not painful, though you may experience mild discomfort during the procedure.

For certain types of pelvic ultrasounds, you may be asked to drink water beforehand to ensure your bladder is full, which helps improve image clarity.

Pelvic ultrasounds can detect conditions such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and certain pregnancy-related issues.

The procedure typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the specific examination.
